Questions asked in MEASUREMENT AND INSTRUMENTATION Minor 1 2026

  1. Q1(a). Define the gross error. If the voltage at opposite ends of 470 ohm +/- 5% resistor are measured as V1=12V +/- 0.5V and V2=5V +/- 2%. Calculate the level of current and accuracy in the resistor and also estimate its maximum and minimum power. [5 marks]
  2. Q1(b). Explain the working principle of PMMC and derive the expression for the deflecting torque and controlling torque. A PMMC instrument with a 100 turns coil has a magnetic flux density in its air gap of B=0.2T. The coil dimensions are D=1cm and L=1.5cm. Calculate the torque on the coil for a current of 1mA. [3 marks]
  3. Q1(c). What is the need for swamping resistance? A PMMC instrument has a three ayrton shunt resistor connected across it to make an ammeter. The resistance values are R1=0.05 ohm, R2=0.45 ohm, and R3=4.5 ohm and the meter has Rm=4K ohm having FSD=50 micro A. Calculate the three ranges of the ammeter. [3 marks]
  4. Q2(a). Draw the circuit of a Wheatstone bridge and derive the balance equation for the unknown resistance. A Wheatstone bridge has P=3.5k ohm, Q=7k ohm, and galvanometer null is obtained when S=5.51k ohm. Calculate the resistance of R. [4 marks]
  5. Q2(b). Sketch the circuit diagram of a parallel resistance-capacitance bridge. Derive the balance equation for the measured capacitance and its resistive component. [3 marks]
  6. Q2(c). A Hay bridge operating at a supply frequency of 100Hz is balanced when the components are C3=0.1 micro F, R1=1.26k ohm, R3=75 ohm, and R4=500 ohm. Calculate the inductance and resistance of the measured inductor as a parallel RL circuit. Also, determine the Q factor of the coil. [3 marks]
  7. QQ-2. Attempt any two parts of the following. Q. (a) is compulsory.
  8. QQ.1. Attempt any two parts of the following Q. (a) is compulsory.
