Questions asked in Chemical Process Calculation Minor 2 2026
Q1(a). A solution of potassium dichromate in water contains 13% K2Cr2O7 by weight. 1000 kg of this solution is evaporated to remove some amount of water. The remaining solution is cooled to 20 °C. If the separated K2Cr2O7 crystals contain 80% K2Cr2O7 and 20 % water, calculate the amount of water, evaporated. Solubility K2Cr2O7 is 0.390 kg mole per 1000 kg water (at 20 °C). Atomic weights: K 39, Cr 52. [6 marks]
Q1(b). A gaseous mixture contains 80 % CH4, 15 % C2H6 and 5 % H2 by mass basis. Calculate the average calorific value of gaseous mixture in term of J/mole. Given, calorific value of CH4, C2H6 and H2 are 48000, 40000, 150000 J/g respectively. [4 marks]
Q2(a). Dry methane is burned with dry air and both are initially at 25 °C. The flame temperature is 1297 °C. If the complete combustion is assumed, how much excess air is to be used. Given: Heat of reaction=200000 cal/mole, Cp of CO2, H2O, N2 and air are 12.37, 9.6, 7.68 and 7.74 cal/mol/°C respectively. [6 marks]
Q2(b). From Q1(B), Determine the rate of heat released when gaseous mixture with volumetric flow rate 500 l/hr at 30 °C temperature is completely burned in the air. [4 marks]
